Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital was formed in 1974. It has a worldwide reputation not just for its surgery, but also for its broader ministry of care and rehabilitation for women who previously were often overlooked by the medical profession. As unbelievable as this may seem, in the past injuries sustained in childbirth were often sidelined and not given priority for care and advocacy. Doctors Reg and Catherine Hamlin started the Hospital when Haile Selassie was still Emperor in Ethiopia. Reg died in 2001, but Dr Catherine, now in her 80s, is still working and leading this great work.
